The Seminar

Following the Leader,
Accompanying the Follower

Only by understanding the underlying structure of the dance can the Leader truly compose, accompany, and respond to the movement of the Follower.

This seminar focuses on the coordination between that structure, expressed through the Follower's steps, and the Leader's capacity to choose, shape, and vary how those steps are accompanied.

Rather than teaching sequences, the weekend develops a shared technical language that allows both roles to move with greater freedom, clarity, and musical sensitivity.

The Goal

A Mutually Inspiring Dialogue

We will explore what is led, what need not be led, what followers can add, and what leaders can expect.
These concepts foster a more equal and responsive partnership, supporting deeper connection, clearer communication, and a richer shared experience on the dance floor.

The Curriculum

The Technique Foundation

Fundamentals of Biomechanics, Aesthetics, and Musicality

Every day, technique classes develop body organisation, movement quality, and musical interpretation for both leaders and followers.

These fundamentals are explored each day through a specific thematic lens:

Friday

Biomechanics & Embrace

All about the tango embrace through turns and changes of direction.

Exploring how posture, tone, and spatial awareness shape the embrace, and how these elements support fluid turning and directional changes.

Saturday

Dissociation & Hip Motion

Boleos: dissociation, hip motion, the free leg, and leader variations.

Understanding how dissociation and hip dynamics generate elasticity, expression, and playful dialogue between partners.

Sunday

The Free Leg & Sacadas

Leader and follower sacadas: trajectory of the free leg.

Developing clarity and precision in sacadas by refining the pathway, intention, and projection of the free leg in both roles.

The seminar is aimed at experienced tango dancers who are comfortable working with concepts such as axis, dissociation, embrace, and shared balance, and who are interested in refining quality, musicality, and connection rather than collecting new figures.

Instructors

Giselle Anne and Diana Cruz are widely regarded as two of the most influential figures in contemporary Tango pedagogy.
Master Pedagogue

Giselle Anne

With a career spanning four decades, Giselle is a leading figure in Argentine Tango, respected for her rare ability to articulate the deep emotional and technical structures of the dance.

Her global reputation is built on a foundation of pedagogical clarity and a musical sensitivity that allows dancers to unlock new dimensions in their connection.

Contemporary Visionary

Diana Cruz

Diana is recognised for her refined, contemporary approach to Tango. Her work places a profound emphasis on listening and embodied musicality.

She offers dancers a deeply integrated understanding of movement and partnership, helping them move beyond patterns toward a more authentic form of expression.

Giselle Anne

Witness the Connection

In this insightful demonstration, Giselle Anne deconstructs the structural mechanics of the boleo, showcasing the precision and fluidity that define their combined teaching philosophy.

A note from the organiser

I have had the privilege of studying with Giselle Anne and Diana Cruz on three occasions, and each time it has fundamentally changed how I understand and experience Tango.

In my view, Giselle Anne and Diana are among the very best dance teachers I have encountered, not only because of their technical depth, but because of the clarity, intelligence, and generosity of their teaching.

What makes their work truly special is that there is always something to learn, regardless of your level. I have seen highly experienced dancers discover new layers in their dancing, just as I have seen less experienced dancers make meaningful breakthroughs.

This is exactly why I wanted to bring them to Oxford and share their work with our community.

Giselle's Only UK Appearance in 2026

This will be Giselle Anne's only teaching engagement in the UK in 2026, and the only opportunity this year to study with Giselle and Diana together in the UK.

Participant numbers are deliberately kept small to support the depth, continuity, and quality of the learning experience. Priority is given to full-pass participants.

The Atmosphere

While the Oxford Tango Intensive is designed for experienced dancers, it is first and foremost a community event.

A carefully balanced floor with respectful, engaged partners

A welcoming, supportive social atmosphere

Organisers who actively look after the group dynamic

Space to ask questions, experiment, and learn without pressure

“This is not an audition, and it is not a competition.”

It is a shared learning experience for dancers who care about quality, curiosity, and connection.

Seminar Venues

The architecture of a space dictates the energy of the dance, and we selected two beautiful, dancer-loved venues.

All venues feature high-quality, sprung wooden floors - ideal for long sessions of Tango, allowing both stability and ease of movement.

Despite ongoing works around Oxford Railway Station, access to both venues and to our recommended parking areas remains straightforward and unaffected.

FAQ

We know that deciding to join an intensive can raise all sorts of practical and personal questions.

Below you'll find answers to the most common ones. And if anything is still unclear, you're very welcome to get in touch.

Am I experienced enough for this seminar?

This seminar is designed for dancers with a solid foundation in Argentine Tango, typically those who are comfortable dancing socially at milongas and who want to deepen their understanding of technique, connection, and musicality.

That said, this is not an audition, and it is not about “proving” your level. If you are dancing regularly, curious about improving, and excited to learn in a focused but supportive environment, you are very likely to feel at home here.

Our aim is to bring together dancers who care about quality and learning

Do I need to come with a partner?

For the main seminar, yes: participants are required to attend with a dance partner.

This allows the teaching to build progressively and gives everyone the best possible learning experience.

We also know that finding a partner isn’t always easy. Many people would love to attend but don’t currently have someone to come with.

For this reason, we actively support partner searches and keep a waiting list for dancers who are still looking. If that’s you, please feel free to get in touch, we’ll do our best to help.

What is the atmosphere of the event?

While the Oxford Tango Intensive seminar offers high-level technical content, the atmosphere is warm, respectful, and community-oriented.

You can expect a focused learning environment, combined with a friendly social dynamic where people are open, supportive, and genuinely interested in dancing with each other.

This is not a competitive or hierarchical space. It is a shared learning experience for dancers who care about connection, curiosity, and growth.

Who is organising the Oxford Tango Intensive?

Oxford Tango Intensive is a not-for-profit, community-led project organised by members of the Oxford tango community.

Our goal is to bring exceptional teachers to the UK while creating an event that feels human, well held, and rooted in real connection, not just in running a programme. We care about both the quality of the teaching and the quality of the experience.

Is this seminar suitable for male leaders?

Yes, very much so. The seminar is designed for both leaders and followers of all genders.

It is fully suitable for male leaders, and at the same time places strong emphasis on the follower’s experience. The content is grounded in traditional tango and explores musicality, connection, and communication within the partnership.

What is the cancellation and transfer policy?

While tickets are non-refundable, we understand that plans can change.

You may transfer your place to another dancer of the same role at any time. We will assist this process by connecting you with our official waiting list should one be active at the time of your request.

In the very unlikely event of Oxford Tango Intensive having to cancel, we will refund any deposits (minus applicable bank fees).

Partner Search

We actively support tango dancers who are looking for a partner to attend the seminar.

If you would love to join but do not currently have a partner, please get in touch with us - contact Robert at contact@oxfordtangointensive.org. We maintain a partner search list and will do our best to connect dancers who are interested in attending together.

We currently have several followers looking for a partner, so if you lead and are considering attending, we'd love to hear from you.
